Summary: Katharina finally understands what the old story of the lady in the lake meant.
They’d spent many a happy weekend afternoon by the lake, Ulrich, Magnus and Martha would bathe, Katharina would sit at the shore keeping an eye on Mikkel, who was still too young at that time to go in with the others. One time Magnus, wanting to scare Martha away from the lake, had told a story about there being a dead woman at the bottom of it (that was one that had circulated when Katharina was in high school, and which she’d used to scare Regina Tiedemann at the time. Katharina wasn’t sure who had passed it on to Magnus now; possibly his father). Martha had shrugged it off, not letting it stop her from bathing in the lake; Mikkel had been the one who had become upset by it and Katharina had had to explain that it was just a silly story, that there was no one there.
In 1987, as Katharina attempted to free Ulrich from the ward only to get into her final confrontation with her mother, one of her last thoughts was of the story she remembered from all those years ago, and she finally understood who Magnus had meant.
